Protection From Babaji
Mahavatar Babaji has intrigued spiritual seekers since Yogananda first wrote about the deathless avatar in Autobiography of a Yogi nearly eighty years ago.
It’s been said he only reveals himself to those he chooses, is capable of God-like feats, can be in multiple locations at once, may appear to us in dreams, and those in high states of meditative consciousness can perceive him.

His physical presence is that of a young man of about 25, with dark, calm and tender eyes–the whole universe glistening within them. Yogananda said he had long, lustrous copper-colored hair. One person said his hair was down to his waist, long and flowing. Some described him as a young boy of 9 or 10, another said he was a tall, thin man. Others have seen a radiant glow emanating from his forehead.
Those who have had experiences with Babaji say they felt protected and cared for by him.
Swami Kriyananda once told of being helped by Babaji while visiting India in 1960. He was seeking a secluded place for meditation but had no place to stay. One morning, after meditating, he prayed to Babaji, requesting assistance in finding a peaceful, secluded location for his retreat.
Later that same morning while having breakfast at his hotel, a man sitting at the adjacent table introduced himself and without any prompting offered him a place to stay in a cooler climate where no one would disturb him. The incident strengthened his faith in the protection of the guru and convinced him of the reality of supernal phenomena.
All-knowing Divine Preceptor
Though I have never met Babaji in person, he is responsible for saving our son’s life when he was four years old.
I had parked our car on a steep ridge next to the pre-school our son was attending. After a quick conversation with the teacher, I looked around the classroom but he was gone. Looking outside, I saw our old Honda slowly rolling backward down the ridge toward what I knew was an even steeper drop.
I screamed “Om Babaji, Om” several times as I ran out towards the car thinking I could halt the progress of two tons of steel barreling down the hill before me.
I caught a glimpse of our son at the helm, standing calmly between the driver’s and the passenger seat, his hands on the dashboard seemingly unaware of what was happening. My eyes shot to the long slope down the hill behind him and wondered how the crash might occur. My focus returned to Babaji.
The car, which had been moving straight backwards, suddenly turned in a sharp angle toward an even steeper drop of the ridge that would insure a much quicker demise. I surrendered and watched in horror. Then it stopped. The bottom of the car had miraculously caught on a single rock rising about fifteen inches from the ground. It was the only rock on that part of the ridge. The car was teetering there, and as I quickly rushed to the door, I realized if I moved or opened it, the car could suddenly slide off its perch and take us both down the cliff. The fear on my face and the precarious position of the car churned the ether.
A few seconds later, a car drove up and an elderly gentleman with white hair and wise eyes assessed the situation. His eyes locked with mine as if to say, don’t move I’ll be right there. He quickly parked his car, strode up, and calmly asked me for my key. Then he opened the door, stepped inside and started it. With the car dipping up and down like a teeter-totter, and its wheels spinning furiously, he somehow drove it off the precipice onto flat land.
I know there is no way my car could have turned at such a sharp angle and land on the only rock in sight. I also know the gentleman who came to assist me was equally as miraculous, just as others have related their experiences with Babaji.
Answered Prayers to Babaji
One man visiting Babaji’s Cave in the Himalayas during the monsoons became separated from the group he was traveling with. A sudden and intense downpour caused him to slip off a muddy trail, falling down the hill into a steep ditch. He was 6’8” tall, weighed 250 pounds, and was a fundamentalist Christian new to meditation. He shouted “God, Christ Jesus, I DID NOT COME TO INDIA TO DIE!” Instantly, he felt a strong hand grasp his left wrist, lift him up out of the ditch and up onto his feet. It was a young boy, wearing flip-flops and carrying a bell-shaped gourd.
By all accounts, and that of another man who also lost his way on the trail, the young boy was Babaji. After he led the pilgrims to their bus, he suddenly disappeared, just as quickly as he’d appeared.
Another story came from a single mother raised here in the Ananda Community. “I was going through a very challenging time in my life—my whole world was falling apart and nothing was working. Everything led to a dead end. After a few years of this I was worn down. Then something happened that was too much for me to handle.
“I had no money, no job, and didn’t know where to turn. I sat down in my room and cried. After a long time of this I suddenly felt as if I was pulled through the air. With lightning like speed I was being drawn to a place in the Himalayas, and a voice spoke to me: ‘What is the matter? Don’t you know I have always been with you?’ There in front of me, talking and consoling me, stood the great avatar Babaji.”
Beyond Human Comprehension
What little we know of Babaji is preceded by his spiritual stature, which Yogananda described as beyond human comprehension. Babaji’s mission is to uplift the world. He is ageless and deathless, in constant communion with Christ. His mission is to inspire nations, forsake wars, race hatreds, religious sectarianism and the evils of materialism.
Though today’s world may seem to be falling apart, Babaji is well aware of modern trends, politics and the complexities of the world. He realizes the necessity of spreading the yogic teachings of self-liberation everywhere. Those who meditate, pray for world peace, and consciously send out light and love to all are helping him evolve this planet to a spiritual haven of higher consciousness.
Babaji can come to us in dreams, in the flesh, during meditation and through our thoughts, which he is able to guide when we are truly receptive.
If you have never been to India or to Babaji’s Cave, we are offering a pilgrimage to visit places from Yogananda’s Autobiography of a Yogi, ending with a retreat to Babaji’s Cave. This will be in February, 2027. If you’d like to be on our contact list let us know here. Perhaps this tour will help inspire you to higher realities.
